Mission

The mission of the Barry Onouye Endowed Studio is based on the intrinsic connection between architecture and structure.  Though often separated into disciplines of architecture and structural engineering, the two have been fundamentally linked throughout the history of the built environment.  Built works – in their form, space, and materials – are best understood as equal manifestations of architecture and structure.  With this as a premise, this studio aims to:

• Encourage design thinking that equally considers both architectural and structural opportunities
• Explore possibilities that challenge the conventional separation of disciplines, and suggest new areas of innovation
• Foster mutual understanding and appreciation between architects and engineers
