Onouye Studio | Jay Taylor | 2013
Description
The inaugural Barry Onouye Endowed Studio sought to continue Barry’s legacy of integrating architecture and structures at the University of Washington, making it fitting that our inaugural Chair, Jay Taylor, was one of Barry’s students. Barry’s teachings redefined the professional possibilities and ultimately inspired Jay’s career path.
In this studio, students designed for the challenging program of a new Nordic Heritage Museum in the Ballard neighborhood of Seattle. Drawing on Taylor’s expertise with this program types, students had to provide for several levels of galleries, exhibition spaces, libraries and retail spaces, within a fully-developed structural frame. The studio took a weekend trip to Dallas to tour several prominent museums and performing arts spaces like the Dee and Charles Wyly Theater (OMA/REX), Perot Museum of Nature and Science (Thom Mayne/ Morphosis), Kimbell Art Museum (Louis Kahn), and Museum of Modern Art of Fort Worth (Tadao Ando).
