Description
The Chicago Studio is the second-annual graduate level studio focused on the role of structure in architectural design. This studio seeks to engage students in a creative collaboration to realize the integration and resolution of structure in a way that reinforces the underlying architectural concepts. The project was located in Chicago, at the now abandoned construction site of the Chicago Spire, Santiago Calatrava’s proposed 2000’ tower, which would have been the tallest residential building in the world. However, the foundations for this tower were constructed and they are a reminder of the impact of the Great Recession (2008). This studio presents an opportunity for re-envisioning the possibility of this prominent site, adjacent to Lakeshore Drive, the Chicago River and Lake Michigan. The program consists of two buildings on this site: a residential high-rise tower and a children’s museum. Students worked in three teams to masterplan the site for both the tower and the museum, considering the infrastructure, circulation, context and climate. After the master plans were established, each student selected either the tower or museum for further development. After initial master planning, the students traveled to Chicago to visit the project site, see landmark buildings, and learn from professionals in related fields.
Chair Bio
Joseph Burns, P.E., S.E., F.AIA, RIBA, is Managing Principal at Thorton Thomasetti Chicago, and a passionate advocate for the deeper integration of architecture and engineering. With more than 40 years of experience, Joe specializes in the design of complex structural systems, including earthquake engineering and dynamic analysis. His credits span across several building types, including commercial, residential, healthcare, education, cultural, aviation and sports and infrastructure. He holds a B. Arch from University of Notre Dame, and MS in Civil Engineering and Architecture from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. A recipient of the American Institute of Steel Construction’s Special Achievement Award, Joe was also named to Structural Engineer’s Power List and Engineering News-Record‘s (ENR) Top 25 Newsmakers. He is well-known as an innovator of projects, receiving recognition for the pioneering use of Tekla modeling in the redevelopment of Chicago’s Soldier Field in the late 1990s.
